1- Open the WhatsApp on your Android smartphone and tap the vertical three dots icon in the top right.
2- Then go to Settings and go to Account and then Privacy.
3- Now everyone can go to Groups and select either one of My Options, My Contacts, or My Contacts Except.
4- If you choose everyone, anyone can add you to their group.
5- If you choose My Contacts, only the people in your contact list will be able to make you a part of the group.
6- The third and last option is to select My Contacts Except only select people will be able to add you to the group. You can either one by one or tap the Select All icon in the top right, these people will send you invitations to the private chat to join the group, then you will have three days to accept the request or invitation. Or deny, otherwise the invitation will expire three days later.
The following is how users who use WhatsApp on the iPhone can protect themselves from the unknown group.
Open your WhatsApp on the iPhone and go to the tab settings on the bottom bar, and then go to Accounts, Privacy and Groups.
On the second screen, select one of the three options: Everyone, My Contacts and My Contacts Except. Here you can select all contacts either one by one or by using the Select All button.
