Chinese Doctors ‘Using Plasma Therapy’ on Coronavirus Patients, What is Plasma Therapy?

Doctors in Shanghai use blood plasma infusions from people who recover from coronavirus to treat those who are still battling the infection to announce encouraging initial results said a Chinese professor.

The coronavirus epidemic is believed to have originated in a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, and has so far killed 1,770 people and infected more than 70,000 in mainland China.

What is Plasma and What are Platelets?

Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood. It is composed largely of water and proteins, and it provides a medium for red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate through the body. Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are blood cells that cause blood clots and other necessary growth healing functions.

Platelet activation plays a key role in the body’s natural healing process.

He said the hospital had set up a special clinic to administer plasma therapy and was selecting patients who were willing to donate. The blood would be screened to check if he or she had other diseases, like hepatitis B or C, he added.

“We are positive that this method can be very effective in our patients,” he said.

Some of the key advantages of PRP injections are that they can reduce the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications like opioids. In addition, the side effects of PRP injections are very limited because, since the injections are created from your own blood, your body will not reject or react negatively to them.
