HEC Aims to Provide Students’ Mobile Phone Packages to Facilitates with Distant Learning

The provision of Internet access in remote areas has been an obstacle in the cycle of online learning that was implemented in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic as an alternative to university classes. There have also been some student unions protesting it. Finally, a solution has been sought by the Higher Education Committee (HEC).

HEC Chairman, Tariq Banuri said that HEC has been in contact with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to allow for special mobile packages for the students in remote areas.“Overall fee waive off would only be possible if government increased the budget for higher education,” he said.

In this financial year 2020-21, federal government allocated PKR 64.1 billion for HEC against its promise of allocating PKR 70 billion to the Commission as recurring grant.

The federal HEC had demanded an allocation of PKR 104.789 billion as recurring grant for fiscal year 2020-2021. However, more disappointment for HEC when the government presented its budget on June 12, it turned out that the Commission had to face a further cut of PKR 6 billion. The federal government had allocated PKR 64.1 billion for HEC as recurring budget for the FY 2019-2020.
