Punjab Govt to Bring Areas Around Highways, Motorways in Property Tax Net

The Punjab government has decided to bring agricultural lands as well as areas around national, provincial highways and motorways in the net of property tax under the Punjab Finance Act, 2019.

The decision was taken during the 37th meeting of the provincial cabinet chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar at the Chief Minister’s Office on Monday. Provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants, chief secretaries and secretaries of relevant departments attended the meeting.

The meeting also approved amendments to the Punjab Motor Vehicle Transaction License Rules 2015. According to the amendments, unauthorized card dealers with more than 10 years of experience will be charged a security fee equal to the authorized dealer for registration, whereas unauthorized motor car dealers with less than 10 years of experience will be charged double the security fee of an authorized dealer.

Meanwhile, the provincial cabinet approved amendments and re-implementation of Punjab Overseas Pakistanis Act, 2014. Following the amendment, the number of members of the commission will be increased from 23 to 27, while the Overseas Pakistanis Commission Committees will be formed at the tehsil level on the pattern of District Overseas Pakistanis Commission Committees.

Likewise, the meeting approved the upgradation of Emerson College (Multan) to university, while Children’s Hospital and Institute of Child Health (Lahore) would also be upgraded to the status of ‘University of Child Health’.

The cabinet also approved the renaming of government colleges after phasing out BA/BSc, MA/MSc programmes. From January 1, 2021, the BA and MA programmes will end and there will be no new admissions. Degree College will be renamed as Associate Degree College, Post Graduate College will be renamed as Graduate College, whereas there will be a Post Graduate College for M.Phil degree.

Furthermore, the meeting reviewed the Local Government Land Use Plan Rules 2020, and directed the concerned to set up a committee to come up with final recommendations in this regard.
