How to Verify Your National Tax Number?

The overseas Pakistanis who wish to avail income tax exemption on ‘profit on debt’ received from the remittances deposited in their domestic bank accounts will now have to submit ‘exemption certificates’ to their respective banks, according to a report published in a leading English newspaper.

In addition to that, the FBR has ruled out a further extension in the filing of income tax returns. However, it has authorized respective chief commissions to accept the requests for extension after the deadline.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced December 08, 2020, as the last date for filing income tax returns for the fiscal year 2019-2020. So, if you haven’t filed your taxes yet, make sure to log in to the FBR’s IRIS portal to complete the process. 

The authority has also updated its Tax Asaan application to make it easier for the citizens to file their wealth statement and carry out their online NTN verification.

If you are wondering how to check online NTN verification in Pakistan, then this blog is for you. We will go step by step and help you through the process of verifying your tax number online.  Also, there are two ways through which you can verify your National Tax Number (NTN) – either through the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) website or through FBR’s official mobile application i.e. the Tax Asaan App, so that you can check the online NTN verification while on the go.

HOW IS ONLINE NTN VERIFICATION DONE IN PAKISTAN?

It is quite simple to get the online NTN verification in Pakistan. All you have to do is visit the FBR’s website. You will see the ‘Online Services’ tab appear on the left hand side of the website. Click on the ‘Online Verification Portal.’ You will land onto the online verification services page. Click on the online NTN/STRN Inquiry tab. You will land onto the page as shared below:

You can get your online NTN verification by choosing NTN in the parameter box. In the ‘Registration No.’ box, write down your National Tax Number without the dashes. If you have chosen CNIC in the parameter box, then write down your CNIC in the registration box – that too without the dashes. Now, you only need to add the captcha and then click on the Verify button and there you go! You will get the following details:

  • STRN
  • Name
  • Personal details (including cell number, email address and postal address)
  • Date on which you registered as a taxpayer
  • Tax office
  • Status of registration

This is also called the online STRN verification or online verification for sales tax.

HOW TO ACCESS ONLINE VERIFICATION SERVICES THROUGH FBR’S TAX ASAAN APP

Tax Asaan is a smart mobile application that provides selected features of the IRIS web application. Taxpayers can now easily access numerous verification services offered by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Apart from making e-payments through the app or going through the simplified process of sales tax registration for businesses via FBR’s Tax Asaan App now you can also check the Active Taxpayers’ List and make an NTN Inquiry or an online STRN Inquiry. Moreover, you can easily check the Exemption Certificate and the CPR Utilization Status. Let us get started on how to use the online verification services for taxpayers via Tax Asaan App.

The government is also taking measures to update the process of filing tax returns via the Tax Asaan App, which will give on-the-go access to the taxpayer wanting to file e-returns.

Download FBR’s Tax Asaan App through Google Play Store. Open up the Tax Asaan App. The home screen will appear. The main menu will open up and you need to first sign into your account.

After signing in choose the Verification Tab, a drop down menu will appear consisting of the following sub options.   

  • Active Taxpayer List (ATL)
  • Online NTN/STRN Inquiry
  • Exemption Certificate
  • Notices and Orders Verification
  • Computerized Payment Receipt (CPR) Utilization Status

It is easier now to check your taxpayer status. Now, the verification of taxpayers’ status can be done with a click of a button. To use the online verification services via Tax Asaan App first click on the Active Taxpayer List tab. The user will be redirected to the ATL verification page. Enter the Registration Number i.e. the 7- digit National Tax Number or NTN without leaving any space or using any dash. Or you can also enter your CNIC Number too, without using any dashes.

Choose a specific date by clicking on the calendar icon. Press the Verify button to check your taxpayer status.

You can get complete detailed information regarding your National Tax Number (NTN), Sales Tax Registration Number (STRN), Computerized National Identity Card Number (CNIC) and even Passport Number.

Click on the button saying Online NTN/STRN Inquiry under Verification Tab to access online verification services via Tax Asaan App. Enter your CNIC number if you want information against your CNIC. Hit the Verify button and you will get complete details about your CNIC, like your name, address and when was it registered.

HOW TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT EXEMPTION CERTIFICATES VIA TAX ASAAN APP

If you are given any tax exemptions through FBR, the details of these are also available on the app. You just have to click on the tab saying Exemption Certificates, which you will find under the Verification Tab. The smart application will redirect you to the respective landing page. Enter the ‘Bar Code Reference’ in the given field. Press the verify button to get complete details. You will get details like your name, registration number, the tax year, under which section you have been given the exemption certificate, the date of issuance and if it is still active or not.

HOW TO GET NOTICES/ORDERS INFORMATION VIA TAX ASAAN APP

To get all sorts of information for any notices or orders by FBR follow the steps. Click on the Notices and Orders Verification Tab under Verification button, the user will be redirected to the respective page. Enter the Order Reference Number in the given field. Then click on the Verify button. Complete information and status of the given notice would appear on the screen.

The online verification services via Tax Asaan App is also meant to verify whether mentioned CPR is utilized for payment of any tax. This is how you can check the status of CPR. It is also commonly referred to as the CPR verification through FBR.

Click on the Computerized Utilization Status under the Verification Tab. The application will be redirected to the relevant page. Enter the CPR number in the given field. When you click on the verify button, the CPR Utilization Status would appear. So, for instance your Sales Tax Computerized Payment Receipt (ST-CPR) has been claimed it will appear as shown in the picture above.
