Miftah Ismail, the Finance Minister, announced the criteria for receiving the ‘Sasta Petrol, Sasta Diesel’ relief package on Saturday. People with a monthly household income of less than Rs40,000 could text or call 786 with their CNIC (computerized national identity card) numbers to receive Rs2,000, he said.
Miftah said the government’s relief package, which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a day earlier, would help protect the poor from the “storm of inflation,” during a press conference in Islamabad.
“We cannot provide complete relief because we do not have enough resources,” he added, “but we will do everything we can to do.”
He clarified that the relief package was open to anyone with a monthly household income of less than Rs40,000, not just motorcycle owners. People who were already BISP beneficiaries did not need to send their information to 786 because they would receive the money automatically, he added.
According to Ismail, 14 million households will benefit from the relief package. “In June, the government will give Rs2,000to needy families” In addition to the 3.3 million BISP recipients, this package added 6.7 million families with a poverty level of less than 37.
“7.3 million Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) beneficiaries are already getting Rs2000, and the government is planning to add 7 million more people to the list who will receive Rs2000 in terms of fuel subsidy,” Miftah continued.
