Pakistan’s tourist destinations are finally receiving the attention and recognition they deserve.
On the International Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021, the country recently climbed six places. The World Economic Forum released a report titled “Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future,” which ranked Pakistan 83rd out of 117 countries. The country was previously ranked 89th in the index.
According to a report published by a leading news outlet, “a six-point increase in Pakistan’s ranking on the global travel and tourism index is quite a significant progress, and now Pakistan is among the countries in the Asia Pacific Region that have improved their ranking the most since 2019,” explained PTDC Managing Director Aftab-ur-Rehman Rana.
He also stated that, while the government has taken numerous steps in recent years to boost tourism in Pakistan, the country still has a long way to go.
“Although we have made significant progress, we still need to do a lot more in the coming years to further improve the performance of Pakistan’s tourism sector, which has enormous potential to play a key role in the country’s overall socio-economic development,” the PTDC managing director added.
It’s also worth noting that in the most recent edition of the international index, Pakistan beat several notable countries, including Kuwait, Nepal, and Lebanon.
What is the international travel and tourism development index?
The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index has been updated to create the Travel & Tourism Development Index. According to its official website, it measures “the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable and resilient development of the Travel and Tourism (T&T) sector, which in turn contributes to the development of a country.”
This index provides a set of benchmarking tools for governments, international organizations, businesses, and other entities to use in order to improve a country’s travel and tourism sector. The report also includes cross-country comparisons and tracks each country’s progress on various travel and tourism development drivers.
The index is divided into five subindices, each of which is further divided into 17 pillars, totaling 112 individual indicators. Please keep in mind, however, that the subindexes are only used for categorization and presentation purposes and are not included in the final calculation.
The latest edition of the World Economic Forum report can play a significant role in improving policies and encouraging stakeholders to further develop Pakistan’s major tourist attractions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which wreaked havoc on the global tourism industry.
The following are the five sub-indices and their respective pillars:
Business Environment, Safety and Security, Health and Hygiene, Human Resources and Labor Market, and ICT Readiness are all examples of enabling environments.
Prioritization of travel and tourism, international openness, and price competitiveness are all examples of travel and tourism policies and enabling conditions.
Infrastructure includes air transportation, ground transportation, and port infrastructure, as well as tourist services infrastructure.
Natural resources, cultural resources, and non-leisure resources are all demand drivers for travel and tourism.
Tourism and Travel Environmental sustainability, socioeconomic resilience and conditions, travel and tourism demand pressure, and impact are all factors to consider.
