UAE’s Emirates Airline Offers Free Cargo Capacity for Aid to Pakistan

The International Humanitarian City (IHC), which is located in the United Arab Emirates, has announced that groups based there can use free cargo space on Emirates flights to Pakistan to help flood victims there.

In a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier this week, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed voiced support for the people of Pakistan, who are presently dealing with the destruction caused by floods.

Flash floods have occurred in Pakistan as a result of unusually heavy rains. Since mid-June, the floods in Pakistan have killed over 1,200 people, impacted 33 million people, and destroyed thousands of homes.

There have been at least 11 planes from the UAE that have brought aid for the floods to Pakistan.

Late on Friday, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, tweeted, “To support communities in Pakistan devastated by floods, Emirates is giving cargo capacity free of charge for NGOs to carry necessary relief materials through the International Humanitarian City.”

He stated that the UAE’s president and vice president had instructed officials to provide urgent supplies to Pakistan, and he concluded by saying “we’re ready to do our part.”

In order to help Pakistan deal with the flood disaster, UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum approved 50 million dirhams in emergency aid earlier this week.

According to PM Sharif, a significant national effort is currently underway to restore basic services in flood-ravaged communities.

The PM stated that “The National Highway Authority, DISCOs [Power Distribution Companies], PTA [Pakistan Telecommunication Authority], and other federal ministries have done remarkable work against the stiffest of odds and substantially rebuilt the destroyed infrastructure,” the PM stated.
