Fact Check: Punjab Vehicle Biometric System Is Not Suspended

The Punjab vehicle biometric system has been suspended for three months, according to reports that have circulated since last week.

According to reports, the decision was made because the records of older cars and motorcycles have not yet been digitalized. Punjab Excise has suspended the biometric verification system for a short time in order to resolve system issues.

According to the reports, the department will suspend the system from September 11, 2022, to December 11, 2022. And this time frame is calculated to make it easier to register older vehicles. According to the data, 177,000 vehicles are expected to be registered during these three months, bringing in Rs. 15 billion for the department.

But is It Really Suspended?

There has been a significant update to this story, as our very reliable sources have rejected these reports as inaccurate. “The Punjab Excise Department has requested the Punjab government for a 60-day relaxation time frame for exceptional cases,” adding that in these special cases, the applicant will file an application with the Excise Department stating the reasons for the buyer’s or vendor’s unavailability.

“After receiving and assessing the application, the department can bypass the biometric system to manually register or transfer the vehicle,” the sources said, emphasizing that this would only be done in exceptional circumstances.

“The biometric verification system is functioning as expected,” the sources concluded. Most importantly, there has been no official notification, and the 60-day relaxation will be effective following notification from the Punjab government.

As a result, we must all await official notification from the Punjab government. Meanwhile, the biometric system is fully operational, and you can use it to register and transfer vehicles. This is a fantastic initiative by the Punjab Government and the Excise Department to help the people, and it should continue to operate.
