The National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) recently announced the closure of the M2 motorway near Thokar Niaz Baig.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) is currently repairing the road, which suffered significant wear and tears during the monsoon rains. According to an official Tweet, the NHMP has set up a detour near Thokar Niaz Baig. Officers are directing traffic to an alternate route from there.
According to Twitter alerts, NHA is performing repairs at various locations along M2. Roads near Babu Sabu, Sial, and a few other locations are being repaired. The NHMP has advised motorists to drive cautiously in these areas.
Assembly members chastised NHA for its slow pace on road repairs during a standing committee meeting last week.
Senator Kamil Ali Agha expressed that the department should prioritize road restoration with toll tax funds. He also added that the M2 has deteriorated to the point where it is dangerous to travel on it.
Senator Saifullah Abro also expressed concern about the increase in tolls on highways from Rs. 160 to more than Rs. 1,000. He added that the increase has made it difficult for people to use highways.
During the same session, the government reinstated the toll tax exemption for MNAs and MPAs, which sparked public outrage. The idea that the government is dumping its weight on the public while enjoying no accountability and rampant corruption has taken over social media.
People criticized the government’s decision to reinstate toll tax exemption for MNAs, arguing that they should be treated the same as the general public.
