PM Shehbaz Picks Gen Asim Munir as Pakistan’s New Army Chief

Lt Gen Asim Munir and Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza were picked by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday to serve as the COAS and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, respectively.

The Prime Minister has decided to appoint Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff and Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff using their constitutional authority, according to the country’s Information Minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb. The nuclear-armed army will soon be led by Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir.

The appointment of important army officers is made public by the information minister after a special cabinet meeting in the nation’s capital, which was presided over by the premier. The meeting was attended by senior ruling alliance officials.

The second-most senior general for the coveted position was General Sahir, while General Asim, the previous Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was at the top of the list of seniority.

President Arif Alvi has received the summary and is hoping that everything will be resolved in accordance with the law and the Constitution, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif earlier in the day told reporters. A key figure in the PML-N expressed hope that President Alvi would heed the PM’s advice and prevent controversy with the appointment.
