Pizza Hut and Burger King Owners Sell Off Business in Pakistan

Pizza Hut and Burger King, two well-known fast food chains, are now managed by a new company in Pakistan thanks to Maaks International’s acquisition of MCR and MCR Pakistan.

Burger King and Pizza Hut are run by the firms MCR and MCR Pakistan, respectively. According to reports, the transaction will cost between $10 million and $15 million. Burger King and Pizza Hut will both carry on with the same brand identification.

Maaks International is an independent company with its headquarters in Rawalpindi/Islamabad. The company works in the FMCG, hospitality, pharmaceutical, rice, and oil sectors.

Although Pizza Hut and Burger King are currently closed, their new owner has promised that they will reopen this month.

Currently, there are 84 Pizza Hut locations and nine Burger King locations across the country. Maaks International will add 25 new locations for the two restaurants every year.

We intend to completely reorganize operations, said Azhar Jafri, Executive Director of the recently acquired MCR and MCR Pakistan, in an interview with Business Recorder. We aim to have 50 Burger King locations and 200 Pizza Hut locations by the year 2027.

He went on to say that MCR’s failure to keep the chain at its global standard was the primary cause of Pizza Hut’s poor performance in Pakistan.

Due to problems with the supply chain, all Pizza Hut locations have closed. The former management was unconcerned with Pizza Hut’s atmosphere or supply chain. As a result, Pizza Hut lost ground, and its competitors benefited.

Yum Brands is the owner of American Pizza Hut. It also owns KFC, The Habit Burger Grill, and Taco Bell. The company is in charge of more than 53,000 franchises across 155 countries.

Restaurant Brands International (RBI), the company that also owns Tim Hortons, Popeyes, and Firehouse Subs, is Burger King’s parent company. RBI runs about 28,000 stores across more than 100 nations.

Why Things Went South?

Pizza Hut’s previous management did not adhere to Yum! Brands’ guidelines. A similar fate already befell KFC Pakistan. You’ll struggle if you break those rules, Jafri continued.

Jafri revealed that well-known companies were thinking about purchasing the long-listed MCR portfolio. Many well-known companies submitted bids to buy MCR, but foreign firms like Yum! must abide by certain regulations, Jafri continued.

He disclosed that the transaction was almost complete but that the banks’ accounts needed to be reconciled. Pizza Hut and Burge King will be run directly rather than through a sub-franchising arrangement.

Will Prices Reduce?

Jafri asserted that because Pizza Hut will compete with top-tier pizzerias, prices will remain high. Pakistan still has a lot of potential in the high-end food sector, despite the current inflation.

He went on to say that Pizza Hut has rivals in Karachi. However, there isn’t much competition in some places. For this reason, Pizza Hut is considering setting up shops in Nawabshah and Larkana.

Jafri promised that Pizza Hut, which is undergoing change, will be revolutionized with the most recent technologies. MCR has dispatched a technical team to Dubai to copy the Yum! software that is used throughout the world.
