TGA Introduces Autonomous Vehicles to Facilitate Transportation of Pilgrims in Hajj

The Transport General Authority (TGA), in an effort to provide cutting-edge contemporary technologies for sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation, is launching the trial of self-driving electric buses to serve the pilgrims during this year’s Hajj season of 1444 AH.

The initiative is a part of the authority’s efforts to provide a variety of transportation options, according to Saudi Press Agency (SPA), making it simpler for visitors to the Holy Mosque.

The self-driving buses use artificial intelligence, cameras, and environmental sensors to run autonomously along a predetermined route. In order to improve the passenger experience and ensure safety, they collect information while moving and analyse it to make the necessary decisions. Each bus has 11 seats, runs for 6 hours on a single charge, and has a top speed of 30 km/h.

The service’s objectives include facilitating pilgrim transportation and determining whether using these technologies during Hajj is practical. The foundation for their potential commercial operation is another goal of this project.
