Google has introduced a personalized AI-based note-taking app called NotebookLM to help people learn more efficiently. The app, previously known as Project Tailwind, was unveiled at the Google I/O event and is currently in the experimental stage through Google Labs.

NotebookLM aims to redefine the concept of note-taking software by leveraging a robust language model. Currently, the AI app is accessible exclusively within Google Docs, but Google plans to expand its availability to other formats in the near future. Currently, only users in the United States can access NotebookLM by joining a waiting list through Google Labs.
Why is NotebookLM different from other AI apps?
Google’s NotebookLM aims to address a significant challenge posed by large language models like ChatGPT and Bard: the issue of ‘hallucination,’ where incorrect information is confidently generated and presented as accurate.

To combat this, Google employs a technique called ‘source-grounding,’ which creates a personalized AI that understands the information relevant to individual users. By analyzing users’ notes and sources, the language model gains insights to provide accurate answers. However, Google advises users to verify the AI’s responses against the original source material instead of blindly relying on the application.
What can NotebookLM do?
NotebookLM, developed by Google, offers three main capabilities:
1- Summary Generation
With NotebookLM, users can generate a summary that includes key topics and questions after adding a Google Doc to the app. This feature helps users get a concise overview of the document’s content.

2- Asking Questions About Source Material
NotebookLM allows users to ask questions about the documents they upload to the app. For instance, a writer researching a biography could upload their research notes and ask a question like, “Provide a summary of all the interactions between Houdini and Conan Doyle.” This feature helps users obtain specific information from their source material.
3- Generating new ideas
NotebookLM enables users to generate fresh ideas by utilizing the uploaded documents. For instance, a content creator could upload their ideas for a new video and ask the AI to generate a script based on those ideas. This feature helps users in the creative process by providing AI-generated content suggestions.
