Govt to Charge Radio Licence Fee in Electricity Bills

According to a Thursday report, the federal government has made plans to deal with Radio Pakistan’s financial crisis. According to sources within the finance ministry, the Ministry of Information has prepared a summary proposing an additional charge of Rs15 on consumers’ electricity bills.

The plan involves increasing the state TV fees from Rs35 to Rs50 on electricity bills, with Rs15 of the increased amount allocated to Pakistan Radio to support its operations.

This decision is based on recommendations from the Senate Standing Committee. In February of the same year, the committee had suggested implementing an Rs500 “radio fee” on all vehicles except motorcycles at the time of registration.

This measure aimed to generate additional revenue of Rs 15 billion annually to assist the financially struggling state-run Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), commonly known as Radio Pakistan.

The Senate sub-committee on Information and Broadcasting, led by Irfan Siddiqui of the ruling PML-N, made the recommendation to address the financial hardships faced by the PBC’s serving and retired employees, who have been grappling with financial difficulties for more than a decade.
