To enhance accountability, reliability, and efficiency in apprehending suspects and criminals, the Punjab police has introduced a groundbreaking ‘Facial Recognition System (FTS)’ empowered by artificial intelligence (AI).
The advanced FTS utilizes AI to create a vast database comprising information on over 18 million individuals, including wanted criminals and suspects. This cutting-edge facial recognition technology enables law enforcement officers across the Punjab province to swiftly locate accused individuals and criminals.

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) and the Punjab Police Information Technology (IT) Wing worked together to create the FTS. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar oversaw the official launch of this cutting-edge system. DIG Ahsan Younas, leading the IT Wing, played a crucial role in collating data from various divisions and organisations within the Punjab Police, resulting in the development of this highly sophisticated system.
The Face Trace System (FTS) comprises an extensive database of 16 million records and pictures from the driving license branch, 1.8 million records from the Crime Record Branch, 1.3 million from the Punjab Khidmat Marakaz, and 300,000 records of accused individuals and criminals from Punjab prisons. This wealth of data equip law enforcement with the tools to significantly improve their success in identifying and apprehending culprits.

The FTS is also a useful tool for locating and following suspects who have been photographed by CCTV cameras and other sources. Because of its cutting-edge AI compatibility, it can identify criminals accurately, resulting in quick arrests.
The implementation of the FTS has been communicated to districts, and there are plans to connect the system with e-police posts and crime prevention apps in the near future. This forward-looking approach will further enhance the efficiency of identifying and arresting criminals, bolstering public safety and security.
