In a significant move towards modernization and improving citizen services, Punjab Police has introduced e-driving licenses for residents of Punjab, Pakistan. This initiative aims to streamline the process of obtaining driving licenses and enhance road safety across the region.

Once approved, citizens can download their driving licenses in PDF format, making it easy for them to carry and use while driving. This transition from traditional paper-based licenses to digital formats is expected to bring numerous benefits.

Rapid Growth in License Issuance

Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police, Usman Anwar, revealed that more than 3 million driving licenses were issued in 2023 alone. This increase in license issuance reflects the effectiveness and efficiency of the new system. Additionally, the number of driving license centers has expanded from 45 to 200 across Punjab, further facilitating the application process for citizens.

Addressing Long-standing Challenges

Pakistan, like many developing countries, faced several challenges with its traditional paper-based driving license system. These challenges included long queues, processing delays, and the proliferation of fake licenses, which undermined road safety. Moreover, corruption and bribery were prevalent when dealing with traffic authorities.

A Step Toward Enhanced Road Safety and Transparency

The transition to e-driving licenses marks a significant leap forward in addressing these issues. It promises to reduce corruption, eliminate the issuance of fake licenses, and enhance road safety. By streamlining the application and renewal processes, Punjab Police aims to create a more transparent and efficient system that benefits all citizens.

Challenges and Uncovering Fake Licenses

Despite these positive changes, challenges remain. The Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) recently uncovered a network responsible for issuing over 27,000 fake driving licenses over three years. These suspects charged individuals between 4000 to 10,000 for each fake license and even used a counterfeit website to verify these licenses. The FIA’s investigation highlighted the need for continued vigilance and efforts to combat fraudulent activities in the realm of driving licenses.
