In a groundbreaking move set to kick off on January 12, 2024, the interim government has introduced a pioneering installment plan for iPhones.
The government is marking a significant collaboration with key telecom stakeholders. Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology, Umar Saif, who initially announced this initiative in October 2023, recently revealed the program’s details.
Recognising that a substantial portion of the Pakistani population utilizes mobile phones, Dr. Saif highlighted the financial barriers that prevent many from affording high-end smartphones. The new initiative aims to bridge this gap. By providing individuals with convenient and affordable installment plans for accessing the latest smartphone models.
iPhone Inclusion in Installment Plans
An intriguing aspect of this initiative is the inclusion of iPhones in the range of devices covered by the installment plan. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will implement the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking Systems (DIRBS) to ensure adherence to installment payments. This system has the potential to block handsets in cases where individuals default on their installment payments.
Promoting Responsible Financial Behavior
Dr. Umar Saif emphasized that this policy promotes responsible financial behaviour while fostering the continued expansion of smartphone accessibility across diverse income brackets.
Key Roles of Telecom Companies
Telecom companies are poised to play a pivotal role in this initiative. They will directly provide smartphones to consumers through structured installment plans, extending the benefits of mobile broadband, particularly to lower-income segments of society.
