Pakistan Consumes 55bn Plastic Bags Annually

Pakistan uses 55 billion plastic bags annually, which is expected to increase by 15% annually. On World Plastic Bag Free Day, Senator Sherry Rehman, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change, emphasized the severe environmental impact of plastic bags in Pakistan.

In her message, Senator Rehman urged the nation to consider the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment. She highlighted that plastic pollution is a serious problem in Pakistan, with single-use plastic bags causing water blockages, litter, and harm to humans, wildlife, and marine life.

“Plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose, posing significant risks to our environment and health. Our cities, both large and small, are struggling with plastic waste management,” she stated.

Senator Rehman noted that while there have been efforts to reduce the use of plastic bags, these efforts have not succeeded due to a lack of alternatives, slow implementation, and low public awareness.

She called on everyone to reduce their reliance on plastic bags and other plastic items, support eco-friendly alternatives, and adhere strictly to anti-plastic policies.
