Nokia Launches Barbie Phone With No Internet

HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded phones, has introduced a new Barbie-themed flip phone, catering to those seeking a break from constant internet connectivity.

Priced at $130, this vibrant hot pink device is part of the growing trend towards “dumb phones,” which offer basic functionality without the distractions of social media and other online services.

The Barbie flip phone, adorned with the iconic Barbie logo, comes equipped with a 0.3-megapixel camera, a flash torch, and interchangeable back covers. To add to its nostalgic charm, it includes Barbie-themed stickers and a pastel-beaded phone strap, making it not just a functional device but also a fashion statement.

This phone is a product of a collaboration between HMD Global and Mattel, the company behind the Barbie brand. Despite the phone’s launch coming over a year after the release of the “Barbie” movie, industry analysts predict strong sales. Research firm CCS Insight expects HMD Global to sell around 400,000 units of this Barbie phone in the U.K. alone within the year.

The lack of internet connectivity is a deliberate choice, resonating with the increasing desire among consumers, especially Gen Z, to engage in digital detox. This trend reflects a broader movement towards minimizing the impact of social media and the constant bombardment of online content.

HMD Global, which has held the rights to sell Nokia-branded products since 2016, rebranded as Human Mobile Devices earlier this year. The company continues to earn royalties from the sales of devices carrying the Nokia brand, while also exploring new partnerships and product lines, such as this Barbie flip phone.

This latest release offers a unique alternative to the typical smartphone, appealing to those looking for a simpler, more focused mobile experience.
