Cambridge Dictionary Changes the Definition of “Woman” and “Man”

The definitions of “man” and “woman” in the Cambridge dictionary have been updated to include people who do not identify with the s*x they were assigned at birth, according to the BBC. The new definition of “man” is “an adult who lives and identifies as a male even though they may have had a different s*x at birth.”

According to the revised definition of the term, a woman is now “An adult who lives and identifies as female even though they may have had a different s*x at birth.”

The definitions that came before them assumed a constant consistency between sex and gender identity. The new definitions, however, include transgender people.

According to a Cambridge Dictionary spokeswoman, “This was added by our editors to the entry for “woman” in October. They looked carefully at the word’s usage patterns and came to the conclusion that English language learners should be aware of this definition to help them understand how the language is used. An adult female human being is still the original definition of a woman, and it has not changed.

He went on to say that their dictionaries were developed for English language learners and were made to help users understand English as it is used today.

Based on a study of the information in this corpus, he continued, “We continually update our dictionary to reflect changes in how English is used.”
